“No one is as deaf as the man who will not listen.” - Jewish Proverb
I saw a quote in the book “Running and Being” by George Sheehan. He quoted a basketball coach he once heard say:
“ There are some days when you just can’t get the ball in the basket, but there is no excuse to not play defense.”
It got me thinking about what we can do when we are having a really hard day in our life and it feels like nothing is going right and it all seems so difficult. So I made my own version of this quote for those days:
“Some days everything seems forced and all uphill; but there is no excuse not to listen to people deeply and connect!
LISTEN DEEPLY!
Stephen Covey’s “sixth habit” of highly effective people states, “Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood.” Covey says “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”
Tich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, stated, “Deep listening is the kind of listening that can help relieve the suffering of another person. You can call it compassionate listening. You listen with only one purpose: to help him or her to empty his heart.”
